On Saturday April 1st in London there was an epic on screen show down between the two leading characters of the short indie film Malicious Attack about Bullying. Some might have thought that this was nothing more then an April fools prank. But it was real and all the cast and crew from this short film took it very serious as this was at the core of the film’s message. What do you do when your being bullied?  It was the big fight sequence between bully Savannah White (Elina Lattanzio) and one of her bully victims Naomi Spencer (Katie Ostojic).  The filming involved a number of the members of the cast members including Jerry Ziler, Corina Leatherdale and Helena Rose to name a few, plus extra’s that play students of the school. Although fighting is not the answer to solving bullying it was the response that Naomi takes in the film. “She want’s to stand up for herself and she is not going to take it any more says the film’s director Matthew Marshall.  The sequence was filmed at the London District Christian School in London, Ontario.  “The have been very supportive of the film” adds Marshall.  He was pleased with the end result of the day and thinks the footage is going to add to the dramatic and emotional effectiveness of the film. “I think everyone is going to be effected in some way by this film. We got some very powerful and dramatic footage from what we shot. The performance of everyone was really good. Especially Elina and Katie in the fight sequence” says Marshall.  Filming included a high angle shot over top of the two main characters fighting and while the others looked on taking footage with their cell phones and cheering the fight on.

The film is produced under the banner of m & s Marshall Productions, in association with IME Films and takes a twist on the traditional bully story line as at its heart it is a ‘good girl gone bad’ due to being bullied. Savannah bullies the “outcast” Raven (played by April Booth), the “Pregnant Teen”, Sara (Played by Tiandra Edwards)  and the “immigrant” in Linda (played by Dina Jasim). But Savannah does not stop there, she also bullies your run of the mill sweet “good girl” Naomi Spencer Each of these characters has a different reaction and response to the bullying they experience. Naomi is the relentless target of the bullying by Savannah. Naomi’s best friend Macey (Morgan Flanagan) tries to find ways to help Naomi expose the bullying, but Naomi is unwilling to come forward. The Attacks on Naomi continue till she is pushed to a breaking point. “The story gives lots of opportunity to discuss the issue of bullying and the reactions of those that are bullied” says Marshall.

It is the hope of the entire cast and crew that the film will teach audiences why bully awareness does not only refer to awareness in the public eye. “ Bullying awareness means awareness of specific incidents to authority figures, awareness of bystanders in their role and awareness of the bullies themselves of the potential gravity of their actions”, says Lattanzio

This was the final day of six that had been planned for the film to be filmed at the end of March and into the first day of April. One scene got cancelled due to a day of heavy rain and needs to be re-scheduled.  “Without a doubt this last day was the biggest of all the days we filmed. It had some very critical and dramatic scenes that make up core of the film and drive the message of the story home”, says Marshall. He is hoping that more community organizations will come on board to assist in various ways to get the message of bullying in the film. The film has thirteen more scene remaining before it goes into post production with the hopes of being ready for the fall for a premiere. Marshall is hoping to premiere the film in a local high school on Bully week but that is something he says depends on editing.
