Filming of the dramatic short film Malicious Attack about bullying continued on Saturday March 25th with a number of more scenes. The theme of these scenes were “Words hurt”. All the scenes focused on the emotional and mental reaction of Linda Tai, one of the characters that is bullied by Savannah White (played by Elina Lattanzio) in the film. The character of Tai is played by Dina Jasim. The scenes included Tai sitting at the kitchen counter when a call comes in from the school telling Linda’s parents that she has missed another day of school. It is clear from the reaction from the character that something is wrong to cause her not to be at school. We later find out that the reason Linda Tai is skipping school is because she is being bullied. Savannah is imposing her reign of terror by saying some very hurtful things to Linda when she confronts her. Jasim reflects on the character having to endure the mean words of Savannah. “Words hurt deeper than we think. Words can get into our body like a disease, slowly affect our brains and hearts” says Jasim.
Jasim goes on to explain that her character is being crippled emotionally and mentally by the things that Savannah is saying to her. “Linda is trying to deal with it and move forward like nothing is wrong. But Savannah is break little pieces of Linda off emotionally with ever mean word and every encounter, making it hard for Linda to function in life. It’s like she is cutting Linda’s air supply off,” adds Jasim.
We see this in some of the other scenes that were film where Linda is laying on the bed consumed in depression and also a scene where she writes in her journal wondering “Why me, what have I done to deserve this”.
Malicious Attack is a 30 minute film that takes a twist on the traditional bully story line as at its heart it is a ‘good girl gone bad’ due to being bullied. Savannah bullies the “outcast” Raven, the “Pregnant Teen”, Sara and the “immigrant” in Linda. But Savannah does not stop there, she also bullies your run of the mill sweet “good girl” Naomi Spencer (played by Katie Ostojic). Each of these characters has a different reaction and response to the bullying they experience. Naomi is the relentless target of the bullying by Savannah. Naomi’s best friend Macey (Morgan Flanagan) tries to find ways to help Naomi expose the bullying, but Naomi is unwilling to come forward. The Attacks on Naomi continue till she is pushed to a breaking point. “The story gives lots of opportunity to discuss the issue of bullying and the reactions of those that are bullied” says Marshall.
It is the hope of the entire cast and crew that the film will teach audiences why bully awareness does not only refer to awareness in the public eye. “We are effected by bullying in some way. We may know someone who bullies, we may be the victim ourselves or we might even be the bully. It is important that we all talk about our roles in the issue of bullying and how it is effecting people around us”, Marshall says when talking about the social issue.
This was the fourth filming day of six that have been happening in recent weeks. “These scenes are just some of the critical and dramatic scenes that are being done that will drive the message of this personal story home”, says Marshall.
